Career/Employability

Please check the Career Counseling Office for job opportunities in the area.

Job Search Tips:
Completing Applications:    Remember the basics - follow instructions and be honest.   Emphasize your skills and accomplishments.    Do not leave any section blank.  Use "NA" for "Not Applicable" if a section doesn't apply to you.    If completing an application by hand, print neatly and legibly (always in pen).    For online applications, have your resume available to upload if requested.    Have an appropriate email address to submit and be sure to check that frequently when job searching so you don't miss out on an opportunity.    Double check spelling and grammar

Preparing for and Completing Successful Interviews: Research the organization before you go. Practice answering difficult questions. Arrive a few minutes early - don't cut your travel time short. Check your appearance before you arrive - dress appropriately for the interview Bring extra resumes and reference lists Be friendly and professional Emphasize your best skills and experiences for the job.  Give examples to support them. Answer the question, "Why should I hire you", even if they don't directly ask. Try to be relaxed during the interview. Summarize your key strengths before you leave. If you want the job, say so. Follow up after the interview with a thank-you note.

Understand an Employer's Expectations: First impression:  What the employer sees and hears when meeting you for the first time.  Negative impressions are hard to change, so pay particular attention to your attire and presentation.  Dress appropriately. Dependability:  Good attendance and getting the job done.  Convince the employer that you will be reliable.  Give examples. Skills, Experience and Training:  Proving that you can do the job well.  Mention any and all related training and experience in the same type or related job that indicates you are equipped to do the job, or that you can learn new tasks quickly.

MAKE SURE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA IS CLEAN AND APPROPRIATE.  BE INTENTIONAL WITH ANY POSTS SO THAT EMPLOYERS WILL NOT FIND DIGITAL OR ELECTRONIC DIRT ABOUT YOU, (MANY WILL SEARCH)!

Potential Problem Questions:
Consider how you would answer these questions if you were asked:

-Tell me about yourself.
-Why should I hire you?
-What are your strengths?
-What are your weaknesses?
-How does your previous experience relate to jobs here?
-What are your plans for the future?
-Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
-10 years?  (looking for how long you are planning on working for them)

-What will your former employer (or references) say about you?
-Why are you looking for this sort of position and why here?

After an interview you will almost always be asked if you have any questions.  Asking intelligent questions makes a good impression.  Have an idea of what you would ask, if given the chance.  Be prepared.
